Daily Functions, Tomorrow Age-related memory loss, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Dementia. Americans are turning 50 everyday, and as they do, many are either experiencing or concerned they might be experiencing signs of cognitive impairment. But what causes it? Researchers used to think that loss of brain function was due to the death of neurons. It was believed that we were born with a set number of neurons and that at some point in our twenties, they would start to die off, loosing more and more each decade until we reached a point were we reach dementia. With the invention of such equipment as the MRI, the "neuron death" theory has been proven wrong. Recently, it has been proven that we actually grown brain cells well into old age, although it is not known whether these new cells, located in the hippocampus, have any function.
Memory From the collection of things that make up our life experiences, what is it that allows us to remember the details of those moments? One theory lies in the functioning of brain receptors called N-Methyl-D-asparate (NMDA). NMDA is required for certain types of learning, but it now appears that it can play a key role in turning short-term recollections into long-term memory. In a recent study, researchers were genetically able to breed rats who's NMDA receptors could be "turned off" depending on what they were fed. What they found was that when the NMDA were “on”, the rats could learn tasks and later recall what they learned, but if their receptors were turned off after the task had been learned, the rats forgot what they had learned. Also, according to scientists, complex memories like remembering how to reach in a particular situation were especially impaired by turning off the NMDA receptors.
